About us

Matt

Old Sage Outfitters was established in 2025 through the assumption of the Musselshell operation from J&J Guide Service where Matt was a guide for 10 years. While ownership may have changed, the quality guides, top-notch service and deep care for our clients has not.

Matt Bennett is now the proud owner-operator of Old Sage Outfitters at the Musselshell lodge and like many of our clients, has been hunting since his childhood. His passion for the great outdoors helps make Old Sage Outfitters one of central Montana’s premier operations. Whether you are looking for elk or deer, with a rifle or bow, we are here to serve. Come join Matt and our other guides and build a memory of a lifetime. You might just come back for more….

ADAM

Adam Kaufmann, like all our guides at Old Sage Outfitters, spends most of his days outdoors enjoying nature at its best. Adam is our camp manager and guide extraordinaire. He is also just an all-around great guy. Adam’s experience locating, calling, stalking and tracking will make your hunt the adventure you’ve been looking for. Come join Matt, Adam and all of us at Old Sage Outfitters for hunting, comradery and a fine meal. You might just take home your own trophy while you are at it…. Imagine.

FAQs

  • We are located just off of Route 12, north of the town of Martinsdale, Montana.

  • Bring layers of water-resistant hunting clothes and two pair of water-proof boots as weather can be unpredictable in Montana with cold mornings, warm afternoons and cold evenings. Bring a quality backpack, your gear including binos, and your toiletries. We provide bedding, towels and food. We do not provide adult beverages - those are left for you to bring if you choose to do so. Please consume responsibly.

  • Our experience is that elk and deer deserve .30 caliber and larger, though .270/7mm work as well.

Pronghorn may be taken with .264/6.5mm and larger; we do not recommend .243/6mm.

  • There is no need to bring food unless you have specific dietary restrictions or have something you are really fond to eat. We provide hearty meals and snacks that should keep you well-nourished in the field and at the lodge.

  • Okay, this is one of our top questions and not easy to answer - so let’s be honest. Our experienced guides and camp cook work hard for clients and are committed to creating a memorable experience. Tips are a great way to show your appreciation for a job well-done. Some guests tip as high at 20% of the total cost of the hunt and some tip less for the same great service. We only ask that you consider what works for you and you don’t forget to include the cook as part of the total tip amount.

  • 1/3 of the hunt prices is required as a deposit upon booking and final payment is due at least 60 days in advance of the start of the hunt.  We accept checks for payments; credit cards and ACH payments are not accepted at this point in time.

Deposits and final payments are non-refundable except in instances where 1.) the client fails to obtain a license despite best efforts by the client and Old Sage Outfitters LLC, 2.) death of the hunter or a close family member, or 3.) a significant hunter health-related event.  In these situations, we will at our full discretion, consider a full or partial refund, or provide a credit for a hunt in the following year (preferred).   Our refund policy is intended to provide all our clients with the best experience possible given limited availability of hunting slots, license processes and demand that often exceeds supply for key dates.

  • Clients are responsible for transportation to and from airports to our lodge in Martinsdale..

Once at the lodge, guides will transport clients to the field where the hunt will continue on foot.  We do very best to assist clients with limited mobility.

  • Hunting fees do not include meat processing (boning, butchering, packaging, freezing) which can be done off-premise by local businesses.

Skinning and quartering can be provided by your guides at no extra charge.
